Black Mirror: How is “San Junipero” mentioned in the new season?

Second episode of the sixth year of the series has an easter egg of one of the favorite episodes of Black Mirror

Premiere of the week Netflix, Black Mirrorreturned after four years for its sixth season. Surrounded by anticipation, the series has five new episodes with new actors like Salma Hayek (frida), Michael Cera (Barbie), Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) It is Aaron Paul (Better Call Saul). However, the news of an easter egg has caught the attention of fans as it specifically relates to one of the fan favorite episodes, “San Junipero”.

WARNING: Alert for spoilers from this point on.

The mention in question happens in the second episode of the new season, “Loch Henry”. In it, a young couple travels to a Scottish town to record a documentary about the theft of eggs. There, they discover another story, about a violent murderer who terrorized the community years ago.

Faced with this situation, Davis (Samuel Blenkin) and Mia (Myha’la Herrold) discuss an ethical impasse in the face of newly discovered history. He believes the theme is appealing and “cheesy”, while she decides to pursue the theme, ultimately convincing him to join the project. Together they develop a series called Loch Henry: Truth Will Outwhich soon draws the attention of producers.

The episode then moves forward to the future, when their project is indicated to the BAFTA per Best Series Based on True Events. Among the nominees are other productions – including a call Euthanasia: Inside Project Junipero (“Euthanasia: Inside the Junipero Project”).

This short mention soon caught the attention of fans of Black Mirror, who immediately linked it to the series’ third season episode, “San Junipero”. In it, Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) live in a relationship in the idyllic city of San Junipero.

It is soon discovered that the community does not exist: it is, in fact, a simulated reality project that allows elderly, sick and dead people to project themselves young and healthy within the virtual world. In the end, the audience discovers that Yorkie is paralyzed and decides to euthanize her, to live permanently in the simulation.

Due to its optimistic tone – different from the many dystopian stories of Black Mirror, “San Junipero” has become a fan favorite episode. More than that, however, it reinforces the script towards the relationships between episodes, which is a specific proposal for this sixth season. Despite maintaining the format of independent episodes, this sixth year of production proposes some punctual crossings between them.

Black Mirror is available on Netflix.
