Secret Invasion: focus on episode 1 and its crazy final twist

And what Secret invasion ?

Created in 2008 by Brian Michael Bendis, Secret invasion is a cult story from Marvel Comics. In this massive crossover, the Skrulls attempt to take over planet Earth. To do this they organize a gigantic secret invasion, a large background substitute of formidable efficiency. Step by step, the Skrulls kidnap political figures, superheroes and popular influential and strategic to replace them. Thanks to their shapeshifting power, the Skrulls can therefore take the place of our loved ones, our leaders and our greatest heroes without anyone noticing.

Developed by Kyle Bradstreet, the show loosely adapts events from the comics. Series Secret invasion to one close weave on a human scale, but follows some general elements of the source material. The show brings back many characters such as Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) or agent Everett Ross (Martin Freeman). Secret invasion it also introduces new characters starring Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke.

Our take on Episode 1

Kyle Bradstreet’s guideline is clear. And this, from this first chapter. The showrunner is trying to settle in a series of spies within the Marvel Universe. Political and paranoid thriller, the series abandons the spectacular to offer a twisted plot, where everyone will have to be wary of everyone. And in the midst of this cold war comes the return of Nick Fury. Viewers find an aged and tired herotraumatized by Thanos and the events of the latter two avengers. The character of Samuel L. Jackson he is worn down, and totally overwhelmed by events. An interesting reinterpretation of the character, who rides the wave of Old Logan from James Mangold’s film.

This first episode also packs the punch when it comes to plot. Kyle Bradstreet wastes no time with a rather boring introduction and places his assist straight to the heart of his story. All the protagonists of this little chess game are identified directly, as well as the opposing parties. Thus we find on the one hand Talos, Nick Fury and Maria Hill, who will have to stop the great machination of the Skurlls led by Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir).

While this first episode is a bit predictable, it does set up some serious promise for the rest of the series. Predictable, because the most savvy viewers inevitably know who is a Skrull or not. The opening sequence for example, however effective, it is marred by the lack of subterfuge of the staging, which struggles to hide the true identity of Ross …

An unexpected final twist

We are also sorry that the series does not take (at least for the moment) huge proportions. As explained above, the show probably won’t cover every level of the Marvel universe, and it will definitely stick to the urban charactershumans, e “secondary” of the MCU. While the comics Secret invasion got to the heart of his point, involving Earth’s Greatest Heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, the Avengers or even the X-Men.

We can however welcome the end of this first episode, which closes with a bang. This first chapter provides an unexpected final twistwho is not afraid to take risks. Indeed, this first episode ends an attack orchestrated by the Skrulls. The opportunity for the series to show how much Nick Fury is totally overwhelmed. This week’s episode ends with a real roll of thunder Maria Collinapresent in the license since the first avengers, receives a ball by Gravic.

He also looks like Nick Fury’s right hand man succumb to his wounds in front of his friend. So is it a final death or will he survive in extremis in the next episode? Hard to tell. But if the series Secret invasion decide to kill maria hill from its first episode, we can only welcome the risk-taking. See you next week to find out if we really say goodbye to Maria Hill…
