Gladiator 2 : Ridley Scott’s Big New Deal
Months away from the release of his next historical drama Napoleonscheduled for November 22, 2023 and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby, Ridley Scott he already has his head elsewhere. The director is currently on the set of Gladiator 2the sequel to one of his most memorable films.
Led by a heterogeneous cast, including big names (Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Pedro Pascal) and revelations (Paul Mescal, Fred Hechinger, Joseph Quinn)the film will follow Lucius, now an adult, who faces the duo of emperors, the brothers Geta and Caracalla.
To play the lead role, Paul Mescal engaged in intense training while Ridley Scott remains true to himself as director an impressive platform. And while the news hadn’t been the best in recent days following an explosion on set, new footage has shown the excessive ambition of the director.

Collider had the opportunity to go in Malta on the occasion of the Mediterranean Film Festival, and to get closer the filming locations of Gladiator 2. The American media have shared some images taken from afar. We can see in the pictures (gallery below) a huge decor play a Colosseum!
Collider specifies the presence of other buildings, suggesting that Ridley Scott is in the process of reproduce a Roman city. Knowing that production would plan hundreds of extrasonce again we have proof that Ridley Scott is a director on his own, perhaps the last one capable of accomplishing such a feat.
Most importantly, while blockbusters tend to make life easier by using digital effects, the director allegedly found a way to get producers to take more risks. It therefore proves that Paramount (the studio that will distribute the film) is quite confident about the success of Gladiator 2. The theatrical release is scheduled for November 2024.
