Spoiler ahead for the flight. 1 of Strange things Season 4.
flight. 1 of Strange things Season 4 took Eleven on a journey through time with other characters around the world , and the flashbacks filled in some blanks about what made her what she is, but they also raised questions about the Eleven that were introduced in the first season. She barely spoke in season one, and actions certainly spoke louder than words. . Poor El didn’t know the meaning of “friend”, but he’s totally conversational in his season 4 flashbacks. So that’s a plot hole, or just something that Strange things hasn’t it revealed yet? The Duffer brothers have the answer.
The creators – who wrote the entire fourth season before filming at the exit of Strange things norm – answered Eleven’s question that many talk about following the theft. 1 version. Talk with television line Ross Duffer said:
trauma [of the massacre] definitely hit Eleven. Ideally, when we wrote the flashbacks, the goal was to imitate her speech, with pauses, with limited words … But what happens is that she is surrounded by other children in the lab. She is socialized. She then she goes into a coma for a while, she wakes up and is then completely isolated by Dr. Brenner. This is the story of Eleven.
All in all, it’s no surprise that One’s trauma that slaughtered nearly every child and staff at Hawkins Lab, aka the only people Eleven has ever known beyond the distant memory of her mother, traumatized her. Spending time with her “brothers” and “sisters” meant that she had more people to talk to than Brenner. Sure, some of them were delinquents who might or might not want to kill her, but she was more sociable than she was when she ran away from the lab in season one and she showed up at Benny’s Burgers. (RIP Benny.)
Interestingly, Eleven fell into a coma then woke up to be isolated from Brenner, this did not happen in the first record volume of season 4 , will happen in volume 2 or had to be deduced by fans. If this happens in volume 2, it probably is reflects what happened to One after he killed his sister like Enrique Creel. He fell into a coma, woke up as the first of Dr. Brenner’s patient children, and was likely isolated until Brenner was able to carry more children. Matt Duffer expanded on what his brother shared, saying in the same interview:
When you meet her, she is 9, right? And then she passes out. She has no memory of any of this, so she has to relive it. [via Nina]. Season 1 flashbacks taking place after the massacre, she is locked up in a cell alone, with no other children.
Even though Eleven has been in relationships with guys her age for a while, it might be better that she doesn’t remember those days or what happened to them until she’s older. Plus, it’s unprecedented for her to break down after working too hard with her powers, and it makes sense that he left her in a coma at age 9. Ross Duffer added that she “had no interaction other than her unquoted father” between the massacre and her debut in season one, and “that was the thought behind her” of her changing speech. . It wasn’t a storyline, but it wasn’t fully explained on screen in volume 1 either.
Will it be explained on screen in volume 2 or will fans have to come to this conclusion on their own? I wouldn’t be surprised if a comatose Eleven appears on the screen who wakes up with none other than Brenner, due to the parallel with Uno before his transformation into Vecna (which was made with practical effects for the fourth season ), but only the final two episodes of season 4 will reveal how many of her flashbacks remain from her Hawkins Lab days.netflix subscribers you can watch and review volume 1 for clues!)
