Tom Cruise and the surreal stunt
If you’ve got us used to performing stunts, each crazier than the last since the beginning of the saga, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation contains one of the most spectacular ever made by Tom Cruise. From the beginning of the film, the IMF agent tries to stop a plane taking off, on which the terrorists have loaded a dangerous gas. Realizing that Benji or Luther can’t stop the device remotely, he decides to jump onto the wing before holding on to the side door as the plane takes off. Of course, as with all major action sequences since the beginning of the saga, Cruise performed the stunt himself. And not just once.
Therefore, the actor held on to the side of the plane as the device took off, described an arc and landed, eight times in all! Here’s how many takes it took for the scene to be satisfying for Cruise and McQuarrie. And as often during such sequences in the saga, the film crew tried to prevent the actor from redoing the scene each time, obviously without success. If the sequence is visually striking, it was actually very dangerous.

If we can imagine that the actor was very securely attached to the device via harnesses, elements that cannot be controlled could have caused his death. As Cruise revealed in an interview for United States today when the movie came out, when the plane was in the air, any small debris or bird that had passed through the prop before hitting him in the face could have been fatal at this speed. The film crew then scoured the runway from which the plane took off, looking for anything that could pose a danger to the actor.
Despite this, Cruise was hit in the chest by a small rock during one shoot and the actor believes one of his ribs broke on the impact. He even specified that if the stone had hit his hands or, worse, his head, he would have gone through it, and therefore potentially killed. The interpreter of Ethan Hunt is therefore once again not far from disaster to be able to obtain a decision that satisfies him.
