A strange true story behind the film

Run Rabbit Run was inspired by a true story that the film’s screenwriter, Hannah Kent, discovered in a documentary. The idea of telling a story about a boy who remembers a past life germinated in Kent’s mind after watching a documentary about a boy in Glasgow. From an early age, this boy talked about his former life, his “mom first” and the home they shared. At first, his family just thought they were the strange words of a child. However, over time, his desire to return to this house became more and more intense. He was homesick, missed his former family and could provide specific details about him where he claimed to have lived.

The boy claimed the house was on a beach on the remote Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, a chain of islands off the coast of Scotland, and that he had fallen down a hole which carried him to Glasgow. When the documentary crew first accompanied him to Barra Island, they found that everything matched his descriptions.

This story had a profound effect on Hannah Kent and prompted her to undertake research on children who bring back memories of past lives. When asked by Carver Films producers Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw if she had any ideas for a screenplay, Kent suggested that this story could work as a film. She was particularly interested in exploring what it would mean to be a parent to such a child. She was curious how a mother would feel rejected when her son doesn’t want her.
