The mistake of whole generations: why tonsils were massively removed in the USSR

Frequent sore throats and sore throats are very unpleasant. If you suffer from this disease, you have probably thought about removing the tonsils. Stop and think again, see several ENT doctors and listen to what they have to say. Decades ago, the removal of tonsils was considered common practice, so many still harbor illusions about the consequences of this procedure.

In the USSR, the tonsil removal procedure was quite common, especially often performed in early childhood and schoolchildren. The decision to remove the tonsils was made by doctors, and they often insisted on this procedure as the main method of treating purulent tonsillitis or chronic throat problems.

Indeed, at that time, tonsils were considered a source of infections and diseases, and their removal was considered the most effective way to get rid of problems with breathing, swallowing and frequent colds.

Over time and the development of medical science (praise scientific progress!), it has become clear that the tonsils play an important role in the body’s immune system and are involved in protecting against infection. They are the first “filter” that traps and destroys microorganisms that enter through the respiratory tract. If they are not there, the infection will immediately “descend” into the bronchi and below, which is fraught with bronchitis and pneumonia.

In addition, the tonsils are involved in the formation of lymphocytes – immune cells that play an important role in protecting the body against infections.

Modern medicine takes a more conservative approach to removing tonsils, and doctors recommend this operation only in case of frequent and severe recurrences of purulent tonsillitis or other serious problems that cannot be solved by other methods of treatment.
