Pluto TV, Paramount’s ad-supported free streaming service, plans to expand to Canada this fall in partnership with local broadcaster Corus Entertainment as users consider cutting entertainment costs amid a threat of recession.
FAST Channel’s latest international launch comes as Canadian viewers struggle with rising subscription costs and more subscription video offerings than ever north of the border to compete with Netflix and other streaming giants.
Pluto TV, which hit Scandinavian markets and elsewhere in Europe last month, will debut in Canada with more than 100 channels and around 20,000 hours of content, while Corus will sell local advertising on a US-based streaming platform.
Pluto TV is expected to be one of the first ad-supported free-to-air channels in the US to head north as the recession threatens to force Canadians to determine which SVOD channels they should continue to pay for.
“Pluto TV is ready to expand its premium free-to-air offerings to audiences around the world, and this revolutionary partnership with Corus is a testament to that commitment,” said Olivier Jollet, CEO and CEO of Pluto TV International. declaration.
Corus will bring its own local video content to the Canadian version of Pluto TV as Paramount chooses to partner north across the border rather than move to Canada independently.
“They are [major studios] Realize that there is a lot of money involved. It will be competitive. Anything that allows us to have the success we need to justify being in the market, even at the cost of what we spend, a Canadian partner is the way to go and as big as Corus. Daniel Eves, senior spokesperson for Corus Entertainment, said Hollywood reporter.
Pluto TV currently has nearly 68 million monthly active users with over 4.8 billion viewing hours in over 30 countries and territories.
