Disney + unveils its new prices, subscribers are not happy

Disney+ follows in the footsteps of Netflix

The business model of streaming platforms seems to be undergoing a brutal change that does not please subscribers. After Netflix, it’s now up to Disney+ to announce an increase in subscription pricesplus a low-cost offer that will include advertisements.

Indeed, the platform of the giant with Mickey ears unveiled this Thursday, August 10, the new prices that will come into force on November 1, 2023 in France and other European countries (after being launched in the United States last December).

The standard subscription with advertising will be billed at €5.99 per month. This is the low cost offer, which does not offer the possibility of downloading content. It is available on two simultaneous screens. There are also two other offers available: ordinary subscription for €8.99 a month (or €89.90 a year), without advertising, with the possibility of downloading content. Finally, premium offer at €11.99 per month (or €119.90 per year) it allows you to view content on 4 simultaneous screens and benefit from the best possible viewing quality (UHD/HDR, Dolby Atmos), without advertising and with the possibility of download content.

Currently, Disney+ is available at the single price of €8.99 per month (or €89.90 per year) and offers a subscription similar to what will be Premium on November 1st. It is therefore an increase of three euros, plus a limit on the number of simultaneous screens (2 versus 4 currently). A decision that obviously makes subscribers shiver.

For former subscribers, this change will go into effect on December 6, e their subscription will automatically be transformed into a Premium subscription. It will therefore be necessary, if they wish to maintain the current price, to switch to the Standard offer.

Jan Koeppen, President of The Walt Disney Company Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) welcomed the decision:

The launch of the advertising marks a new stage in the evolution of Disney+ in European markets: thus offering more choice to our subscribers and new communication opportunities for advertisers. Disney+ continues to distinguish itself in today’s streaming world with unmatched quality, iconic series and blockbuster hits, while ensuring a smooth and easy viewing experience.

Bob Iger considers limiting account sharing

Like Netflix, Disney+ will soon limit account sharing. In any case, this seems to mean the recent statements by Bob Iger, president of the company:

We are actively exploring ways to address the account sharing issue and the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family.

It is therefore to be expected, in the coming months, to see the appearance of paid options to be able to share your Disney+ account with members who are not in the same household.
