Even with a mixed reception at the premiere, Sob a Pele has received cult status over the years, according to Alberto Barbera
During premiere of under the skin (2013) in Venice International Film Festivalthe film starring Scarlett Johansson and directed by Jonathan Glazer was not well received by the public at the event and received several boos. Including, the actress “almost cried” because of it.
During an interview with The Guardian, Alberto Barberathe event’s artistic director, recalled some of the festival’s defining moments, such as this episode with Johansson. “It was one of the worst screenings I’ve ever seen. It was the only time the audience booed a film. Scarlett I was almost crying,” he said.
I tried to tell her, ‘Don’t worry, in time the film will be recognized.’ And that’s exactly what happened. It is now a cult film.
To the The Guardian too, but in 2014, the actress herself spoke about her reaction to the boos, and classified this moment as very strange: “It was the first time I saw the film with the public and the first time I saw it finished. And I I was on that huge mezzanine floor, so I felt overexposed.”
“So at the end, when the lights came up… there was a sound of people clapping and booing at the same time, but with equal enthusiasm. I didn’t know how to react to it. I think I was just… I wouldn’t say disturbed, but I was kind of shocked,” continued Scarlett Johansson.
I looked at jonathan and he was filled with joy. Absolutely thrilled. We left the theater and I thought, ‘That was so weird,’ and Jonathan said, ‘That was the best reaction! That was the most amazing sound I’ve ever heard in my life.’
In addition to Johanssonthe list of under the skin also had Adam Pearson, Dougie McConnell, Marius Bincu, Joe Szula, Paul Brannigan, Lynsey Taylor Mackay, between others. Read the film’s synopsis below:
