Deauville 2023: Guillaume Canet and Jerry Schatzberg open the 49th edition

Deauville 2023, here we go!

It’s not easy to raise the curtain on the 49th edition of an American film festival… on strike. Indeed, in Deauville this year, the expected stars – notably Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Peter Dinklage – could not make the trip, strike forces of actors and actresses. However, the president of the jury Guillaume Canet nonetheless made a fine introduction this evening of Friday 1 September at the Center International in Deauville to open the festivities. To this end, he paid a personal tribute to this edition’s guest and tribute: the great American photographer and director Jerry Schatzberg.(The scarecrow, Panic in Needle Park, The streetetc.)

A sequence in which the French actor and director recounted their first meeting and last-minute casting The day the ponies come back. Prior to that, a musical interlude was provided by Kyle Eastwood and Andrew McCormack. The American musician, son of the legendary Clint Eastwood, is present in Deauville for a masterclass, on the occasion of the release of a tribute album to his father’s cinema.

Jude Law still present

Figure of cinema whose presence was expected, the British actor Jude Law was also entitled his tribute. At the end of a montage tracing his career, excerpts from several secondary performances (Let’s go back to Cold Mountain, Existence, AI Artificial intelligence, The Paths of Perdition, Aviatoretc.), the festival-goers were able to (re)see it The Queen’s Gamethe opening film of this 49th edition.

In Karim Aïnouz’s film, which traces the life of Catherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), wife of the terrifying Henry VIII, she plays a sick and tyrannical king, monstrous and repulsive. An important performance for the actor, who faces a phenomenal Alicia Vikander in the game of her interiority. Applause could not be missing after this revival of the feature film presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2023. A quite logical choice in this land of Normandy, separated only by a short sea from England where the plot of The Queen’s Game take place.
