Ian McKellen recalled how he had creative differences with the director of the film released in 1983
At 84 years old, Ian McKellen has an extensive career in Hollywood and starred in films such as The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), X-Men – The Movie (2000), The Big Lie (2019) and The Da Vinci Code (2006). With all this experience, the actor had some bad experiences filming.
During an interview with Variety, McKellen commented how The Infernal Fortress (1983), horror film directed by Michael Mann, was the biggest low point of his career. As the actor recalled, he had to go through hours of makeup for the role of Dr. Theodore Cuza – and even entered into a creative conflict with the production director.
“Michael Mann told me: ‘You play this Romanian.’ So I went to Romania to explore and learned to speak with a Romanian accent,” the artist recalled in the conversation. “So, on the first day of filming, Michael told me how he wanted me to speak with a Chicago accent. Well, I couldn’t do that and things went downhill from there.”
In addition to Ian McKellenthe cast of The Infernal Fortress also featured ScottGlenn (Glaeken Trismegestus), Gabriel Byrne (Major Kaempffer), Jürgen Prochnow (Captain Klaus), Alberta Watson (Eva Cuza), between others. Read the synopsis below:
