The opening ceremony is controversial
The opening of the 10th Rugby World Cup on Friday 8 September 2023 was supposed to be a celebration. Paradoxically, the ceremony was quite chilling. It is a live show in which several personalities took part, including Jean Dujardin in the role of the baker Jean Miche – and which would have celebrated a “franchouillard” country, representing the rural France of the 1950s and proposing at least conservative, if not reactionary, values.
The actor ofOSS117 and of The artist, passionate about rugby and a declared lover of his country, appears in a white undershirt, wearing a cap, and in love with a dancer. In France and abroad there have been numerous criticisms, highlighting the “‘cliche“, finding the show “bizarre” at best, when it wasn’t simply described as “embarrassing“.
Jean Dujardin regrets the division
The French love controversy, second degree and malice. And the opening ceremony show was no exception. A division of the public who witnessed him, on site or on television, and which Jean Dujardin regrets, as he explains extensively on Instagram.
I fall backwards. I never thought that my participation in the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup would unleash such a flood of political and media commentary… We wanted it to be beautiful, we wanted it to be festive, we had fun imagining it, we put in the effort all together, volunteers, artisans, artists, happy to prepare it with everyone’s pleasure in mind.
We wanted to celebrate our country, our know-how and the history of rugby.
The “old-fashioned” France of the 1950s? It was in 1954 that France celebrated its first victory over the New Zealanders!
“Rance France”? An opening ceremony is always the presentation to the rest of the world of the country in which the celebrated event takes place. We are in fact also the country of the Basque, of gastronomy, of culture, of education, no offense to some… The second degree that I have always loved to use was not understood and I regret it.
We should certainly have remembered that our country is widely criticized for its polemical and “surly” spirit. It’s a shame we couldn’t avoid it when there was so much good will.
This ceremony was never supposed to pit us against each other, but rather bring us together.
I am an artist, I will not be the standard bearer of any party. I’ll let you settle your affairs between yourselves. I wanted it to be a ceremony of open-mindedness, sharing and joy.
I keep this beautiful emotion warm.
