Arne Johnson, aged 19 at the time, was present during the eventful exorcism of his partner’s younger brother, David Glatzel. During this session in the presence of the famous demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, Johnson allegedly begged the demonic entity to take possession of his soul, instead of that of the boy. By inviting him in this way, the demon would hasten to possess him in turn. A few months later, she brutally killed a man, but said she remembered nothing. He would later confide that it was the work of the demon that possessed him…
Conjuring fans already know the story
If the subject of the Netflix documentary is not unknown to you, it is because it was at the center of it Evocation 3 released in 2021 baptized elsewhere Under the influence of the devil. As in the true story, the Warrens testified to the police on behalf of Arne Johnson, certifying that he was indeed possessed at the time of the crime.
The trial took place in Connecticut in October 1981. The defendant’s lawyer attempted to defend him by invoking demonic possession, but this argument was rejected by the judge. The latter, in fact, believed that such an imaginative argument would never find its place in a court of law, in the absence of scientific evidence.. Jurors therefore could not legally consider demonic possession as a motive for the murder. The lawyer finally appealed to self-defense. After deliberation, Arne Johnson was sentenced to ten years in prison, but spent only five behind bars.
In 1983, author Gerald Brittle published, with the help of Lorraine Warren, the novel The devil in Connecticut. The Netflix documentary is largely based on this book.
Dispute
In 2006, when Brittle’s novel received a new edition, David Glatzel, the younger brother of Arne Johnson’s partner, and his older brother Carl Glatzel Jr., filed a complaint against the author and his publishers for invasion of privacy and defamation. Above all, the latter confided that the story of this possession was a hoax concocted by the Warrens to exploit their little brother’s mental illness.. Furthermore, he complained that he was portrayed as the villain in the book because he did not believe in paranormal phenomena. In the end, he confided that the Warrens had promised him that this story would make them millionaires and get Arne Johnson out of prison.
