Black Phone: A successful horror film by Scott Derrickson
If you’re a fan of horror movies, then the name Scott Derrickson must mean something to you. In fact, it is to him that we owe one of the most distressing films in the history of cinema (even science said so): Leftreleased in 2012. Ten years later, after a detour to Marvel to direct Doctor Strangethe director (to whom we also owe The Exorcism of Emily Rose) returns to horror with Black phone.
Produced by Blumhouse, the film follows the story of a 13-year-old boy, Finney Shaw, kidnapped by a sadistic masked killer, who locks him in a soundproof basement. When the phone is hanging on the wall, although out of order, begins to ring, Finney will discover that he is in contact with the voices of his captor’s previous victims. They are as dead as they are determined to ensure that their sad fate does not become that of Finney.
In the role of the masked killer we find Ethan Hawke, more disturbing than ever, in a counterproductive role for this actor.
TO global box office, Black phone has had great success with more than Proceeds grossed $161 million for a budget estimated at just 18 million (the Blumhouse recipe).
A personal project for Scott Derrickson
Like the film’s young hero, Scott Derrickson lived in Colorado in the 1970s, and was thus permanently affected by the passing of serial killer Ted Bundy in his neighborhood. A personal touch that can be felt Black phone, including the authenticity of the setting, is one of the most surprising elements. Through this horror film, the director implicitly talks about adolescence, loneliness and family ties.
The figure of the sadistic killer is relegated to the background and his motivations may seem unclear to viewers. He remains a monster, devoid of humanity, which makes him even more frightening. In this sense he recalls Michael Myers from the saga Halloween. The physical work done by Ethan Hawke is impressive, as he can create fear simply by sitting in a chair.
Currently, Black phone is very successful on Netflix in France, where the film remains at the top of the ranking of the most watched programs on the platform. Perfect for those who missed it at the cinema.
