Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea: David Fincher Says More About His Aborted Project
Ten years ago, the Australian government announced with great fanfare a film project that would make people dream: a feature film adapted from Twenty thousand leagues under the sea by Jules Verne by David Fincher. Produced by Disney Studios, it was then the the largest film production ever filmed in Australia. Unfortunately the project fell through and as of 2016 (with the announcement of James Mangold at the helm) no news of the film has emerged from the Disney studios.
Currently in Paris for a retrospective dedicated to him at the Cinémathèque Française, David Fincher held a masterclass this Saturday October 14thafter the screening of one of his films, Zodiac. It was during a question/answer session with the audience that the director answered questions about his Twenty thousand leagues under the sea aborted. He explained why the project was never realized, but also the ambitions he had:
I would have liked it to see the light (…) according to the latest news, it is still in the works at Disney, with James Mangold at the helm. We wanted to start from Jules Verne’s novel and make a film that talked about white imperialism, inside a Disney cocoon. It was a funny idea when you think about it. In the end, the budget was going to be over $200 million and I didn’t want to cast a white American star to play the hero (…) it took two years of my life and I’m not going back. Disney’s desires have probably evolved since then (…) But I have to say that I directed this episode of Love, Death & Robots called Bad Traveling, all in CGI, and I managed to satisfy my desire to do a battle of crabs!
David Fincher said.
We remember the adventure novel by Jules Verne which tells the journey of three castaways captured on board the Nautilus by Captain Nemo, already been brought to the screen several times. George Méliès had directed a silent film, released in 1907. The best-known adaptation remains the 1954 one, already produced by Disney. French director Christophe Gans also wanted to tackle an adaptation in the late 1990s, but the project never saw the light of day.
David Fincher’s new film expected on Netflix
As part of the partnership with Netflix (which began with the series House of cards), David Fincher will present his new film on November 10: The killer.
Adapted from the comic series The killer by Jacamon & Matz, concerns the internal torments must face a hitman (played by Michael Fassbender) when he does not successfully complete one of his missions and must face the consequences.
