“We really took Puss on a deeper journey, a more emotional journey,” says producer Mark Swift.
Crawford explains that when he goes into the dark, “it’s still a family movie. Yes, he has an edge, but I think he also has an edge in comedy. I like to tell influential stories, but I almost use comedy as the object of the lens to attract everyone… We want the viewer to leave a feeling of joy, of appreciation for life, and a lot of that is laughter.”
He remembered when they first reported the story of the Banderas extension. “His reaction was, you know, we all go through a lot of death, and it seems like a timely message to really think about what makes a life meaningful.”
As the studio prepares audiences to reintroduce the franchise, producer Swift says it wanted to give the franchise a new look thanks to technological advances. “[The filmmakers on Shrek] They were more limited in what they could do. Now we have an opportunity, I would say, to update this franchise and not take anything away from our characters that people love. ”
“We wanted it to be modern. So from an artistic point of view, we really try to use all of our technological advancements to help us improve,” adds production designer Nate Vrag. “You see a mix of pictorial textures and smooth gradients and a lot more art on the canvas than we normally see because we’re not looking for a realistic image.”
