Millennium Saga: from novels to screens
The saga Millennium is a series of Swedish crime novels created by writer Stieg Larsson. The main characters, Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, are at the center of this series that has fascinated millions of readers around the world. Larsson completed three novels before his death in 2004: Men who didn’t like women, The girl who dreamed of a can of petrol and a match AND The Queen in the Draft Palace. After his death, David Lagercrantz took over, adding three more titles to the saga: What doesn’t kill me, The girl who reciprocated blow for blow AND The girl who had to die.
The popularity of these novels has led to several film adaptations. The first three books were adapted into a series of Swedish films released in 2009 and 2010with Noomi Rapace in the role of Lisbeth Salander.
An American version of the first novel, Men who didn’t like women, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig in the lead roles, was released in 2012, directed by David Fincher. More recently, in 2018, What doesn’t kill me (The girl in the spider’s web) was adapted for the screen by Fede Alvarez with Claire Foy in the role of Lisbeth Salander.
The Millennium series: a new adaptation in sight
After the success of the novels and film adaptations, the saga Millennium is about to have a new life on the small screen. In 2020, it was announced that a series based on the “Millennium” universe was in development at Amazon MGM Studios. However, the project appeared to be on hold until a recent announcement, broadcast by Variety.
The big news is that the series has now found its showrunner in the person of Veena Sud. The latter is a very well-known figure in the world of detective and mystery series. She is particularly known for developing the series The killingbased on the Danish series Forbrydelsen. Or the series Seven secondsavailable on Netflix.
While precise plot details remain under wraps, it was initially reported that the series would be a standalone story centered on the character Lisbeth Salander. Amazon MGM Studios will produce the series in collaboration with Left Bank Pictures, based at Sony Pictures Television.
Since the Millennium series is produced by Amazon, it should arrive on Prime Video soon. We can’t wait to find out who will play the new Lisbeth Salander!
