Friends: the one that still hid surprises
With the recent heartbreaking death of Matthew Perry, the unforgettable interpreter of Chandler Bing, many fans (us included) felt the need to nostalgically dive into the series Friends. And even if we know the episodes by heart, we are not immune from coming across surprises scattered across the web.
In fact, many deleted scenes from the series are available on YouTube. And if you thought you’d already seen them all, there’s a little-known one: the one where girls say what they think about boys. This scene is from episode four of season one of Friends.
Monica, Rachel and Phoebe sleep over at Monica’s house, while the boys are at a hockey game. While on the balcony sipping a cocktail after observing their neighbor (George Stephanopoulos) on the simplest camera, they start discussing Joey, Chandler and Ross:
A hilarious deleted scene
After fantasizing about George, Phoebe asks Monica and Rachel what they think of “their” boys. Rachel says she’s “embarrassed to talk about this,” and Monica persists. Rachel then says that Joey is like one of those kiddie rides where you just insert a coin to “start the car”. Phoebe replies that he might surprise her, and that he once helped her “put on her coat” and that he was very “tender”. The image then shifts to Joey struggling with a snack vending machine in the hospital where Ross is being treated for a broken nose during the hockey game.
Phoebe then goes on to talk about Chandler, saying that he is “repressed” and needs to be “seduced”. Monica replies that she thinks it’s part of her seduction plan, and that it’s “more sophisticated than it seems.” In the next scene we see Chandler ridiculously disguised trying to get the attention of the horrible hospital secretary.
Finally, Phoebe says that “Ross is sexy”, much to Monica’s dismay. Rachel adds, saying that she sees “very well what she means by that” and that he is very “kind.” In the next sequence, we see Ross with a broken nose, which he desperately tries to drink. Rachel then asks “can you imagine him in bed?” to which Monica replies “no, really not”, causing general hilarity.
The funny details of this scene cut from Friends (which really would have had its place in the episode!) is the girls talking about the boys they’ll have affairs with later. Of course Rachel is talking about Ross. Monica talks about Chandler and Phoebe talks about Joey. Even though these two didn’t have a story per se, it was a loving and friendly relationship, which they often referenced.
