Lama : a complicated return for the superhero

After three films Lama worn by Wesley Snipes (two of whom are very good), the half-man, half-vampire superhero will return to service. Only this time it is Mahershala Ali who should embody it. Marvel, which owns the rights to the comic book character, announced the project in 2019. Which didn’t fail to spark a reaction. The first films are particularly violent and bloodywe logically wondered what this would give inside the file Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)which is aimed more at the general public.

However, four years later, the production of Lama n/a not much progress. After a change of director, the feature was put on hold due to strikes in Hollywood. But according to an article by Varietywhich reveals the numerous problems currently present in MCU productions, the progress of Lama it would still be just as complicated.

A chaotic production, Mahershala Ali close to abandoning the project

The American media recall that the project was successful at least five screenwriters and two directors, before being discontinued six weeks before production. According to an informant, the film’s story evolved significantly during the rewrites. With even a version where Blade was a supporting role and the film led by womenalthough “full of life lessons“. From then on, the actor Mahershala Ali was reportedly on the verge of leaving the production. Which would have been a huge blow after the 2019 announcement.

Eventually, producer Kevin Feige would put some order into all of this and hand over the writing to the screenwriter of Logan, Michael Green. The latter would be started from scratch. But above all, Marvel Studios would intend to grant it Lama a budget of less than $100 million. A real surprise when we see how much the recent MCU films cost (around $200-250 million).

A change of strategy on Marvel’s part that could indicate a lack of confidence in the film Lama. Not necessarily reassuring. However, the feature film remains current and, after postponements, should be released in theaters on February 12, 2025.
