Anime is based on the Scott Pilgrim comics, written and created by Bryan Lee O’Malley
One of the most recent releases from Netflixthe anime Scott Pilgrim: The Series adapts the comics Scott Pilgrimin Bryan Lee O’Malleywhich also had a live-action adaptation, titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). However, the animation is quite different from the comic book and the feature film, with a twist in the first episode.
During an interview with Varietythose responsible for the anime, Edgar Wright (who directed the film), BenDavid Grabinski and himself O’Malley. At the beginning of the conversation, Wright highlighted how the new entry in the franchise is “neither an adaptation of the books nor an animated version of the film,” but “almost an alternate reality sequel.”
The beginning of the first episode of the series, titled “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life,” is quite faithful and similar to the comic, but everything changes in the protagonist’s fight, played by Michael Ceraagainst the first evil ex-boyfriend of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha). In the source material, Scott defeats Matthewbut the exact opposite happens in the anime.

A few years after the success of the live-action, in 2018, an executive from Marc Platt Productionswho supported the film with Universal Picturessearched Wright with a question: “Is there anything else we can do with Scott Pilgrim that isn’t an expensive live-action sequel?” Then the filmmaker responded, “I remember saying, ‘Well, why don’t they make an anime?'”
Then, O’Malley was intrigued by this idea. “I liked the idea of working with Science Saru, but I had no story and no motivation. I didn’t want to do a straight retelling, because that feels like death to me,” he recalled.
With this change in mind, those responsible for the anime began to imagine which characters would focus on with the new narrative. “How could we spend a little more time with Ramona? How can we spend time with our exes? How could you do a show that we wouldn’t have done back then?” Grabinski.
I blurted out the idea, ‘Well, what if it starts out as the same story, but then Scott loses the fight with Matthew Patel and apparently die? And then, what if there is a movie Scott Pilgrim in the series starring Lucas Lee as Scott? I introduced them as a joke, but it triggered something in his brain. Bryan who immediately said, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.’
“I feel like we spent the next hour drinking a lot of sake and just talking about ideas. I’m more attracted to mess than perfection, so all these ideas of interrupting Scott Pilgrim really attracted me,” he added. O’Malley.
The reaction from the cast was quite positive, especially from Mary Elizabeth Winstead. “I was like, wait a second, this is kind of the story of Ramona now,” he explained. “It’s been an emotional journey for me to be able to continue her story and show all these different colors of her.”
Interpreter of Todd Ingramthird evil ex-boyfriend of Ramona, Brandon Routh talked about the new perspective on his character: “I think it’s a great dynamic and a fun, innovative way to experience Todd. It was joyful. I could play with this new material that people hadn’t heard of yet.”
