The Snow Circle: What is this Netflix survival?
Expected on Netflix on January 4, 2024, The snow circle is a new survival directed by JA Bayona, notably at the helm of The impossiblereleased in 2012. Once again, the Spanish director tells a terrible true story, which happened in the Andes mountain range in 1972.
The film recounts the terrible crash of Flight 571, which was carrying a rugby team from Montevideo, Uruguay, en route to a match in Santiago, Chile. Struck by tragedy, the plane crashes in the snow-capped Andes, leaving behind a landscape desolate where survival becomes a struggle against temperatures that reach -40 degrees. Of the 45 passengers and crew members, only 29 survive the impactand after days of unsuccessful rescue attempts, they were presumed dead. Nearly two and a half months later, 16 survivors were miraculously saved.
The snow circle is not described as a simple survival game, but as “an intimate exploration of human limits and the spirit of solidarity in the face of adversity”. The film, JA Bayona’s first Spanish feature since then The orphanage in 2007, is based on the book The snow society (2008) by Pablo Vierci, classmate of the survivors. This account describes not only the accident, but also the difficult and controversial decisions survivors made to stay alive, including the use of cannibalism.

JA Bayona, in adapting this book, sought to capture the essence of this story of survival, working closely with Pablo Vierci. The film’s approach is respectful and authentic, with the director speaking at length with survivors and victims’ families to do justice to their story. The snow circle promises to be a visceral and heartbreaking film, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit, even in the most difficult conditions.
