Disaster for The Marvels, the film sets dismal records for the MCU

The wonders : Hit the bottom and dig deeper

During the summer of 2019, Captain Marvel had grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Four years later it was released in theaters The wondersa new adventure brought forward by Brie Larson as Carole Danvers. Joining him are Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan). No more superheroines then, but for a much lower financial result.

In fact, it’s an understatement to say that the film is a failure for Marvel Studios. Made on a whopping budget of $274 million, The Marvels started out as worst start of the history of the studio, with $47 million in revenue collected on the American market.

And the rest necessarily didn’t go well. With a 78% drop between the first and second week, The wonders suffered the biggest decline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during this time. So what was supposed to happen happened. As noted Expiration, The wonders also becomes the first Marvel film to not to exceed the symbolic threshold of 100 million dollars at the national box office. Because even if it is still present in American theaters, with only 2.4 million dollars grossed in its fourth weekend of release, the feature film will no longer be able to go much above the 80 million dollars in takings collected so far.

The least profitable in the MCU

Furthermore, in the rest of the world, the scores are not sufficient to allow the blockbuster to be profitable. As mentioned previously, The wonders costs at least $274 million, excluding promotion costs. However, the global box office figures have so far only been achieved $197 million. The film is therefore the least profitable of the MCU. And the holiday season won’t change anything. Disney has in fact announced that “The Marvels box office is about to endand (which will stop) reporting the worldwide grosses of this title on weekends“.

Recently, Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, explained this poor result due to the lack of executive producers on the set of The wonders, due to the Covid pandemic. For her part, the young actress Iman Vellani remained rather detached in the face of these poor results.
