Barbie: the great cinematic success of 2023
Last July, the film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, was a resounding success at the box office. With a total gross of more than $1 billion, it became the highest-grossing film of 2023 and the highest-grossing film ever made by a solo female director. It is also the highest-grossing film ever released by Warner Bros.and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time. In other words: a real success.
Brought to you by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film begins in a perfect and idyllic world, typical of the Barbie universe, where everything seems to exist only for pleasure and perfection. However, Barbie and Ken soon find themselves at odds an existential crisis that leads them to question their place in this too-perfect world.
Their quest takes them through various adventures, where they explore multiple aspects of life and identity, challenging stereotypes and expectations. The film, while retaining the colorful and joyful aesthetic associated with Barbie, engages in a deeper reflection on individuality, autonomy and the freedom to choose one’s path in life.
The Taking of Margot Robbie
In addition to being the lead actress, Margot Robbie is also the producer of Barbie, with his production company LuckyChap Entertainment. AND very quickly became active in discussions with funders (even going so far as to attempt a bluff to make the film). Recently, she shared another conversation about her not being confronted by the producer of another summer hit: Oppenheimerpublished the same day as Barbie.
Thus, during an argument between her and Cillian Murphy, on the show Actors on actors organized by Varietythe interpreter recalled a conversation he had with one of the producers of Christopher Nolan’s film distributed by Universal:
One of your producers, Chuck Roven, called me because we had worked together on other projects. And he said, “I think you should reschedule.” And I said, “We’re not going to move our appointment.” If you are afraid of competing with us, move your date.’ And he kept saying, “We’re not going to move our date.” I just think it would be best for you to move.” And I said, “We’re not moving!”
It is in fact very rare to see two film studios enter into direct competition with two blockbusters of this caliber. But the simultaneous release of the two films was a real blessing for theaters, which saw their revenues increase thanks to this double release entitled “Barbenheimer”.
