James Gunn is not kind to previous DC films
James Gunn he established himself in Hollywood by directing the first film Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Ten years later, the filmmaker has become an important member of Marvel and the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), directing two sequels (2017 and 2023) before moving on to DC competition.
The director has in fact continued in the world of superheroes with The suicide squad (2021) and the series Pacifier (2022). And now he is head of DC Studios (with producer Peter Safran). Thanks to this, he will be able to reconstruct a superhero universe starting from his own The Legacy of Supermanscheduled for 2025.

The director therefore has some arguments to express his opinion on what, in his opinion, is good or not for a superhero film. And he doesn’t hesitate to underline it what went wrong on DC’s part before it arrives. It must be said that James Gunn is often asked by fans on X (formerly Twitter) on the topic, and the director often takes the time to respond. But this time it’s on Threads (via Expiration), the equivalent of X launched by Meta, on which he expressed his opinion the lack of coherence within the DC Universe.
One of the problems with the DCEU in the past was that there was no real coherence within the universe itself. This never meant that all animated film and video game content would be in the DCU. I said (and continue to say) that most of the TV shows and movies will be in the DCU universe, with an occasional Elseworld story (like Matt Reeves’ The Batman), but it will have to be great.
Too many cameos, delete the cameo
James Gunn thus clarified his position on the future of the DC Universe, before continuing his criticisms of previous films by underlining the excessive and poorly considered use of cameos. For him, introducing a character for a few seconds just to show it off and wink at the fans, without it bringing anything to the film, makes no sense. And he even calls him “porn cameo” (From “cameo porn“).
I call it “Cameo Porn” and it’s one of the worst elements of recent superhero movies. If a character appears in a movie, they have to have a reason to be there story-wise.
Some will no doubt see this as a bit of a challenge, e.g. The flash, which notably featured a much-criticized cameo by Nicolas Cage. So, for his The Legacy of Supermansays James Gunn, all the roles in the film will not be cameos, but real secondary characters an interest in history. We will see it in theaters on July 9, 2025.
