Cinema: new films in theaters on December 20th

Underwater again with DC

The big release of the week is obviously Aquaman 2. A big-budget superhero film that follows the success of the first effort, which grossed over $1 billion in global box office revenue in 2019. Only since then, a lot has changed, and Warner Bros. has done little to make you interested in the new adventure of Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa). Between rumors and conflicts, above all on the Amber Heard casebut even the absence of a pre-release press screening, or the less than encouraging comments from the star of the film being promoted, we don’t expect great success with Aquaman 2.

Here is the synopsis:

Black Manta, still haunted by the desire to avenge his father, is now more powerful than ever with the legendary Black Trident in his hands. To destroy it, Aquaman must join forces with his brother Orm, former king of Atlantis and currently imprisoned. Together, they must overcome their differences to protect their kingdom and save the world from irreversible destruction.

A film to remember: Her father’s daughter

Therefore, this week we recommend you go and see a French film. But not the drama My France for me with Fanny Ardant, nor comedy Preserve with Didier Bourdon, rather a seemingly more modest feature film: Her father’s daughter. The new film by Erwan Le Duc (Under control) depicts a man who has become father at just 20 years old and who, sixteen years later, is worried about seeing her teenager have to leave to continue her studies. A funny and touching comedy-drama brought to you by Nahuel Perez Biscayart and Celeste Brunnquellyoung actress with a bright future, already nominated in 2020 for the César for Best Promise for The Dazzled (2019).

Also, to give you a little change of scenery at the end of the year, Luc Jacquet (The Emperor’s Walk) returns with Trip to the South Polea new documentary that takes him back to Antarctica, where it all began for him.

Wong Kar-wai’s masterpieces released in theaters

Finally, it would be a shame to miss it cycle Wong Karwai which this week features four films by one of Asia’s greatest filmmakers. His fourth, fifth and sixth feature films, Chungking Express (1994), Fallen Angels (1995) e Happy together (1997) are released in theaters, as is the short film The hand (a segment ofEros which dates back to 2004) in a long version.

Every movie is visual beauty who goes to Hong Kong (and Argentina for Happy Together) and sees impossible love stories through. Whether in the middle of a police case or following a hitman, Wong Kar-wai always describes failed encounters, which happen in the wrong place and at the wrong time, between characters in search of identity. And even just to meet immense actors and actresses, with undeniable beauty, such as Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Brigitte Lin, Faye Wong, Gong Li, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Charlie Yeung and Chang Chen, these films are to be (re)watched without hesitation.
