The first episodes try to remain as faithful as possible to the first book in the saga, The Lightning Thief, but bring significant changes to the story
Long awaited by fans of the saga Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the olympiansis now available on Disney+. For now, only the first two episodes have been released on the streaming platform, but fans have already been able to witness that, as promised, the news is very faithful to the first book in the series, The Lightning Thiefon which it is based.
However, despite the scripts being signed by Uncle Rick, as fans affectionately call the author of the saga, the series Percy Jackson and the olympians brought some small but significant differences in its adaptation for Disney+. Below, we list some of them WITH SPOILERS from the first episodes of the series:
Where is the fight against Mrs. Dodds?
One of the most captivating aspects of Rick Riordan It is the ability to deal with a serious subject in a humorous way. Right on the first pages of The Lightning Thiefwe already have some signs of this, especially during the confrontation between Percy Jackson and his surly math teacher, Mrs. Doddswho reveals himself to be, in fact, a mythological monster, who is after the boy.
In the book, Percy remembers that the teacher, over the last few months, always called him “honey” when she was about to punish him unfairly. When the boy is accused of gambling Nancy Bobofit inside the fountain, after the incessant implications with Percy and his best friend, GroverThe Mrs. Dodds invites him to have a little chat in private.
However, when they are alone, the woman reveals herself to be a Benevolent, who wants to kill Percy because she knows he is a half-blood. “Die, baby!”shoot Mrs. Dodds before attacking the boy. At that moment, however, the Latin teacher of PercyO mr. Brunner, appears and throws a pen at the boy, who turns into a sword in mid-air. He picks up the gun and shouts it at the Mrs. Doddsreducing her to a pile of dust.
However, in the series, all of this is reduced to a poor sequence, in which the mr. Brunner – who, in fact, is the centaur Chirondirector of Camp Half-Blood – gives the pen to Percy during a conversation and, when attacked, the boy intuitively takes off the object’s cap, which turns into the sword and kills Benevolent almost by accident.
Apparently, the idea was to reveal the sword only at the end, during the confrontation with the Minotaur, but the decision ended up taking away the emotion of the first fight against a mythological monster from Percy. Furthermore, the series also misses the opportunity, right at the beginning, to set a tone closer to that of the books by ignoring the humor present in the sequence, leading Percy Jackson and the olympians taking a more serious path, which doesn’t quite match what fans are used to.
“Funny” Gabe?
In The Lightning Thiefwe met Sally Jacksonthe kind and loving mother of Percywho is married to the detestable Gabe Ugliano. In the book, he is described by his stepson as a disgusting, sloppy, lazy, disgusting and often abusive man, which makes Percy Questioning, several times, why her mother got involved with someone so opposed to her.
However, the adaptation of Gabe for the series he ended up transforming the character, who remains lazy and ignorant, but quite harmless and even funny, becoming a strong candidate for a stellar supporting role, the ones you want to see more on the scene because it provides some fun moments.
Whereas Percy Jackson and the olympians is a series made mainly for children, the dosage in the disgusting personality of Gabebut this ends up creating a big problem…
Sally’s sacrifice was forgotten
Gabe it went from grotesque to fun, but it wasn’t the only one: Sally Jackson is no longer portrayed as submissive, who goes so far as to rebel because of Percy for lowering her head to all her husband’s abuses, but as an empowered woman. At one point in the first chapter, she even argues with Gabefacing him, making her husband put his tail between his legs and respect her.
However, anyone who has read the books knows that Sally just married Gabe to protect Percysince her husband has such a despicable aura that he is capable of hiding even an heir from Poseidonone of the most powerful gods next to Zeus It is Hades.
The change reduces the size of the sacrifice of Sally. For fear of putting Percy at risk, she chose to join a detestable person and suffered in silence for years. It’s a very significant and moving gesture that, unfortunately, was not adapted for the series.
