Zack Snyder, the reboot
Possibility of planning or happy alignment of the planets, the latest DCEU film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom comes out in theaters at the same time as the presentation on Netflix of Zack Snyder, former boss of this DCEU Rebel Moon Part 1: The Child of Firethe first part of a science fiction saga that clearly tends towards Star Wars. So while the DC extended universe he launched at Warners is dying out, another one is opening up on Netflix.
Two universes that have nothing to do with each other, except that they prove that Zack Snyder is an artist with a “universe”a producer and director whose vision is ambitious, broad, made up of references and winks, under continuous construction. With his first film Rebel moonthe director of 300 and of Man of Steel he managed to stage his great space operawith its galaxies, its characters, “its” artistic directions – Rebel moon paradoxically strikes in its diversity for a completely new creation: its casual coherence and above all its childish joy in having as much fun as possible?
What is he talking about Rebel moon ?
The story of Rebel moon Is simple. In a galaxy ruled by a tyrannical imperialist government, a small farming community peacefully occupies a corner of its independent planet, Veldt. This government and its forces, constantly at war, need resources and one day they arrive in this peaceful community to requisition their crops. A young woman, Kora, whose past is mysterious, will then travel to the four corners of the galaxy to recruit warriors and oppose this slavery.

The inspirations are obvious and Zack Snyder takes them on, taking advantage of the universe of Star Wars for the setting and plot of Akira Kurosawa’s film The Seven Samurai. But Zack Snyder does it to have fun and entertain as widely as possible, without worrying about cinephilia. Complimentary references, and above all complimentary to the show.
At this point in the show, Rebel Moon Part 1: The Child of Fire it’s a success. The empire’s leaders and soldiers are evil and cruel, and one of its leaders, Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) is perfectly violent, sadistic, and Machiavellian. Opposite him, the mysterious Kora, very competent when it comes to fighting, the cute and clumsy Gunnar, a farmer who joins her to defend their village. Their adventures will take them from planet to planet, from fight to fight, in a recruiting story that is, unsurprisingly, a pleasure to follow.
Gladiator, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Matrix…
Zack Snyder’s enthusiasm is contagious, and it’s a shame if it often translates into a great chaos of ideas and representations. In Rebel Moon Part 1: The Child of Fireevery new planet, every new place, in the way of Star Warsit is in fact an opportunity to discover something else. So, each planet has its own color palette, its inhabitants and its own technologies. Robots, monsters, cyborgs, humans, it is therefore an immense bestiary that comes to life Rebel moon.
At some point, you would think you are immersed in the cold streets surrounded by monumental buildings Blade Runner. In another, we indulge in the warm comfort of a bounty hunter’s tavern Star Wars. During a training sequence for a half-horse, half-bird creature, you’d even think you’d see Harry Potter on his hippogriff again.

Zack Snyder shoots in every direction, looks in every direction. Proof of astonishing lightness, he confides to Djimon Hounsou the role of a former general of the empire who becomes a gladiator to surviveand on whose head there is a bounty… And if the multiplicity of planets and “real” worlds were not enough, the empire that conquers and terrorizes these planets possesses a technology that resembles that of the “matrix” of the films of Wachowski Sisters.
A sequel to confirm (and a Director’s Cut to transform?)
It’s hard to blame Zack Snyder for this entertaining mess of references and his desire to celebrate adventure and science fiction cinema. Especially since its cast plays their best and it is convincing. Sofia Boutella (Kora) and Ed Skrein (Atticus Noble) perfectly embody their main characters, the heroine and the antagonist, and around Kora the team formed is very busy. Charlie Hunnam as a charming space smuggler (hello Han Solo), Bae Doona as a bloodthirsty bionic warrior, Michiel Huisman as support worker unusual and in love, or even Staz Nair as a force of nature capable of bonding with animals.
So even though green funds are used very extensively, we go from one issue to another without looking back, and obviously Zack Snyder is not at all afraid of doing too much, thank you this generosity and the casting performances, Rebel Moon Part 1: The Child of Fire it’s very easy to watch. A blockbuster that is both accessible and ambitious, as serious as anything second-rate, which the film seems to be constantly traversed by a real pleasure to beto be developed, and it’s a shame if everything isn’t perfect.
The second part of this great story, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Slasheralready has its broadcast date, set for April 19, 2024. And a long version of Rebel Moon Part 1: The Child of Fire the film is also announced, with R-Rated classification and new sequences. Everything happens very quickly, a bit haphazardly, but with this first film ultra-generous and determined to have funZack Snyder has earned enough credit that we await the sequel with sincere curiosity.
