A disappointing performance for Bradley Cooper

On paper, the success of Master it seemed acquired. A biopic about a famous American composer, a generally unifying film genre, directed and embodied by superstar Bradley Cooperin turn surrounded by a lovely cast that includes Carey Mulligan and Maya Hawke, a co-production of Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese… The spectacle is there, as much in the artistic generosity of the reproduction of times and places invested in the history of Masteras in the exploration of the relationship between Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) and Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).

Available on Netflix: the French film

“Prestige” project for Netflix, Master was generally well received by critics during its presentation at Venice Film Festival 2023, then during its limited release in US theaters before its upload to Netflix on December 20. But on the platform the subscribers received him coldly. In the absence of data describing the extent of the failure, a sign does not deceive. Designed to stand out within a film catalog diverse in both genre and quality, Master however, only integrated very few Top 10 in the worlddespite the worldwide distribution.

In fact, at the end of the first week of broadcast, it entered the Top 10 of only six countries: Portugal, Serbia, Israel, Croatia, Bulgaria and Greece. It did not reach the Top 10 in France, nor in the United States, nor in any other English-speaking country. For the moment therefore, in terms of views on Netflix, Bradley Cooper’s new film is a real failure.

Master saved by the Oscars?

However, this failure can still be put into perspective, or even reversed. In fact, Master is one of those Netflix films destined to amaze film festival audiences and compete for the Oscars. In 2021, The power of the dog by Jane Campion took advantage of its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival to get noticed. Left the Lido with the Silver Lion for best achievementJane Campion also received shortly afterwards the Golden Globe and the Oscar for best director. His film also arrived at the 2022 Oscars 12 nominations.

As of early September 2022, it is Blond hair, also at the Venice Film Festival, which was talked about in the city. This time, no reward, but intoxicating scent of scandal which promised that the film would be seen on Netflix when it went online three weeks later. Master benefited from the same trip and should be part of the favorites in the race for Oscars 2024with serious possibilities in the most prestigious categories.

So if Master was to win one or more statuettes during this 96th ceremony which will be held on March 10, 2024, perhaps it will then arouse the curiosity of Netflix subscribers, to finally integrate several Top 10…
