Disney loses its position as the global box office leader in 2023
Disney was thought to be unstoppable from the top spot at the box office since its acquisitions of Marvel, Lucasfilm and, most recently, 20th Century Fox. But for the first time since 2015, the big-eared company has lost its leading position to Universal.
Powered by the mind-blowing (and amazing) performance ofOppenheimer by Christopher Nolan and the film Super Mario Bros. (more than two billion in total), Universal Pictures is, in 2023, the box office champion with nearly five billion dollars in revenue raised. Among their other successes we can also mention Fast & Furious and its $704 million in revenue, but also the horror film M3GANwhich grossed $180 million (for a minimum budget estimated at $12 million).
Failures linked to staggering budgets
For the first time since 2014, no film released by Disney reached $1 billion in revenue. The biggest success of the year for the studio was Guardians of the Galaxy vol.3 and its $845 million in revenue. The year 2023 was more marked by failures for Disneylike the debacle The wonders, which brought in just $205 million, for a huge budget estimated at $274 million. A financial pit.
Same story for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which underperformed, grossing just $476 million, on a budget of $200 million, well below Marvel standards. We can also cite other examples of Disney’s failures, with Indiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny ($384 million in revenue on a $295 million budget), or even The haunted mansion ($117 million in revenue on a $150 million budget).
If Universal also experiences failures, like Demeter’s last journey, Renfield OR Ruby, the teenage Kraken, their budgets much lower than those of Disney (between 45 and 70 million) made it possible to limit the damage. Faced with this debacle, it would not be surprising if Disney decided in the future to drastically reduce production costs, or to favor quality over quantity.
The rest of the 2023 box office podium is made up of Warner Bros. Pictures in third place with $3.8 billion, driven by the success of BarbieSony Pictures in fourth position with 2.094 billion dollars and finally Paramount Pictures just behind with 2.026 billion.
