Issa Rae criticized the entertainment industry, saying it still pays for “words” against prejudice and encouraging diversity.
Speaking in a discussion at the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival, the Insecure star and creator urged producers to follow suit, noting that he is committed to making all of his sets at least 60% more diverse.
“For me, this is a change on my part,” Reim said. “I now have a mandate to make sure my team is 60% diverse and that comes from realizing my own strength. I can turn down a job if the team is all white, which is always the case. How does this keep happening and what do you want your diversity representative to be like when the people behind him aren’t different?
Raim urged the global marketing and advertising industries to follow suit, saying it’s important “to keep these conversations going so they can be educated and publicized. We empower diverse people to spread diversity when we know what it already is. [my] The challenge is: instructing people to complete the task. Make sure these conversations end.”
His goal, Ray said, was to create a “channel” for people of all backgrounds to enter the entertainment industry.
“We don’t get promoted very often, and when I see these people giving opportunities to others, I’m really proud of that,” he said.
For your next project, Rep Sh!TAt a show in Miami about two high school girls who came together to form a rap band, Ray said it was important that “the residents contribute behind the scenes, including the writers”. “For people to immerse themselves in the story, it has to be authentic.”
Ray spoke at the Cannes Lions panel titled “The Mirror Is Only One Sided” with IBM Senior Vice President Bob Lorde and Ogilvy Global CEO Liz Taylor.
