Halloween Ends: last face-off between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode
In 2018, director and screenwriter David Gordon Green rebooted the Halloween saga with a bold gamble: making a direct sequel to John Carpenter’s 1978 original that would ignore all the other films in the series. And the sauce sets: we find Michael Myers more brutal than everwhen he finds the trail of Laurie Strode, 40 years after their first bloody encounter.
At the box office, is a success, and the film thus launches a new trilogy. Two more films will be released in 2021 and 2022, again directed by Gordon Green: Halloween killsthe most violent part of the entire saga, in which Michael massacres everything that moves, and Halloween endswhich has the difficult task of closing the saga, and above all of offering a true conclusion to the Michael vs Laurie clash.
A final film that divided
The second film, released in 2021, did not have the same box office success as the first, and the situation did not improve with the third, which grossed only 104 million worldwide (against 255 for the first).
Even on the spectators’ side, Halloween ends did not convince. In fact, it’s the lowest-rated work of the trilogy (that’s on the side ofIMDBthat of our colleagues atAlloCiné).
It must be said that once again David Gordon Green made a bold bet, no longer putting Michael Myers in the foreground. Thus, in this third part which takes place four years after the events of It kills, Michael is absent most of the time, and the plot focuses on the tale of the rise of another apprentice assassin, who meets Myers. A surprising choice by the director, and one that disappointed many fans of the Halloween saga, who expected to find a bestial and violent Michael, and only saw the shadow of the latter.
Even the ending, which was supposed to illustrate the culmination of 44 years of trauma for Laurie Strode (still played by Jamie Lee Curtis), did not convince fans.
