A 36th edition completed for the Premiers Plans Festival

At the end of a week full of discoveries and emotions, the jury of the feature films and that of the short films of 36th Festival Premiers Plans of Angers revealed the films in the competition that stood out. The jury that was to reward the best European feature films was chaired by Robin Campillo, director in particular of 120 beats per minute and the recent Red Island. He was surrounded by the actress Zita Hanrot, the composer Julie Roué and the director Nathan Ambrosioni.

As for short films, it is the director Lola Quivoron, noticed at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival with her first feature film Rodeowho chaired the jury, accompanied by the actress Anamaria Vartolomei and the actor Sandor Funtek.

Grand Jury Prize: Borderline

A beautiful story for Spanish cinema by Venezuelan directors Alejandro Rojas and Juan Sebastián Vásquez, who for their first feature film present Alberto Amman and Bruna Cusi in a suffocating environment behind closed doors. The two actors play a couple who leave Barcelona to settle in the United States. But when they arrive at Newark Airport, they are subject to a terrible interrogation by the border police…

Already noted a Reims Police Film Festival 2023and then titled At the entrance, the film won the Audience Award and the Police Jury Award. Now it gets the main prize of the Premiers Plans Festival of Angers. Distributed by Condor in France, it will be available in theaters from May 1, 2024.

Jeanne Moreau Award (Public Award): Riverboom

During its presentation to the public on Tuesday 23 January, the ovation which followed the latest images of Riverboom it left no doubt about its welcome. Extraordinarily rich documentaryat the same time comical, intimate and very enlightening about the journalist’s profession, Riverboom tells the crazy story of the photographer and videographer Claude Baechtold, the journalist Serge Michel and the war photographer Paolo Woods.

In 2002, the three left for Afghanistan to cover news about the American intervention after 9/11. Young, professional and carefree, they will live together an adventure that is both professional and personal, which will change their lives. Twenty years later, Claude Baechtold miraculously found the images he had taken there and edited them Riverboomfrom the name of a river in Afghanistan and also from the name of the publishing house that the three men later founded.

Bouvet Ladubay Award for Best Actor: Bruna Cusi

This is the Spanish actress Bruna Cusi, who plays Elena in the film Borderline, who received the performance award. In this role, for which she is nominated XVI Gaudi Prize in the Best Actress category, she perfectly embodies a woman with her back against the wall, exposed to the violence of an administration that forces her to open up about the most intimate aspects of her life. Her performance in the duet composed with Alberto Amman was brilliant, something that did not escape Robin Campillo and her jury.

Bouvet Ladubay Award for Male Actor: Herbert Nordrum

He is the main actor of Under hypnosis, a Swedish-Norwegian production directed by Ernst de Geer, which stood out from the feature jury of the Premiers Plans Festival. Impressive in his physical presence and interiority as well as in his association with the actress Asta Kamma August, the actor seen particularly in Julie (in 12 chapters) brings his partner with him in this beautiful dramatic comedy.

André and Vera, a young entrepreneurial couple, have the opportunity to present their application on women’s health during a prestigious competition. Before going there, Vera tries hypnotherapy to quit smoking. From that moment on her attitude changes and André begins to behave in unexpected ways…

Scania Award for Diversity : Elaha

The German film Elahawhich takes its name from the beautiful protagonist played by the young Bayan Layla – and whose inspired interpretation could also be worth the Best Actress Award – tells the story of a young woman of Kurdish origin, who is about to get married and who therefore tries to have her hymen reconstructed to restore her “innocence” and “honor” before marriage.

While Elaha understands and respects the traditions and codes of his culture, he also feels that it is a deprivation of independence, freedom and self-affirmation. Film as beautiful as it is harsh on the issue of female virginity, Elaha East a feminist hymn to the progress of mentalitiesas well as respect for the body and natural aspirations of young women.

Price of social energy activities: Six feet on the ground

Already a director of short films appreciated at festivals around the world, Karim Bensalah will direct his first feature film in 2022: Six feet above land, with Hamza Meziani in the lead role.

His story is as follows: Sofiane is the son of a former Algerian diplomat who lived his life abroad. Now a student in Lyon, he is the victim of an administrative decision and lives under the threat of expulsion. Hoping to regularize his situation, he decides to work temporarily for Muslim funeral directors. Lost in his identity, uncomfortable in his skin, being among the dead will prove to be a bright path for him.

Lola Quivoron, Anamaria Vartolomei and Sandor Funtek, at the end of a week in which they immersed themselves in the numerous short films presented at the Premiers Plans Festival, distributed numerous awards, two for European short films and six for French short films.
