James Bond: the director of Casino Royale preferred Henry Cavill to Daniel Craig

James Bond: Henry Cavill vs. Daniel Craig

In 2006, the public discovered the new face of James Bond. Succeeding Pierce Brosnan (who played 007 from 1995 to 2002), Daniel Craig he made his debut as the famous spy with Casino Royale. The Craig era then lasted 15 years, with four more films. The actor became famous mainly thanks to James Bond and gave a quality performance. However, the story could have been different. What if Daniel Craig hadn’t been hired to play the secret agent? What if instead it had been a certain Henry Cavill?

This has often been mentioned in recent years to take Craig’s place. But he would have been very close to getting the role Casino Royale. This is what he said Matthew Vaughn during an interview with SiriusXM in the presence of the director, Henry Cavill and Sam Rockwell to talk about the film Argyle. The director confided that he was present at the Pinewood studio during auditions for Casino Royale, just like Henry Cavill and Daniel Craig. Matthew Vaughn knew Craig from pointing him out Layer cake (2004). The actor then told him: “There’s this young man called Henry Cavill who they’re apparently seeing“. This is how the director noticed the little-known Henry Cavill, for whom he would later hire Stardust, the mystery of the star (2007).

The director’s choice, but not Barbara Broccoli

But above all Matthew Vaughn confides during the interview that the director of Casino Royale Martin Campbell, who admitted he had doubts about Daniel Craig, did a preference for Henry Cavill. Except that it was Barbara Broccoli who found it too young (15 years separate the two actors). And of course she had the final say.

I know the director preferred your audition, but Barbara preferred Layer Cake. Then they thought I was too young.

A surprising frankness on the part of Matthew Vaughn, who however believes he has nothing to lose because, in any case”I don’t like broccoli very muchWe will never know what the films would have been like James Bond with Henry Cavill rather than Daniel Craig. But the former still managed to later embody another famous figure Superman.

He also played the role of the spy very well, becoming Napoleon Solo Very Special Agents: Code UNCLE (2015). And it is in the same register (although more comical) that we find it Argyle (currently in theaters). So there’s no regrets to have. Especially because once again Daniel Craig has done “good job” playing James Bond, as Henry Cavill admits. The interview can be seen in the video below:
