Avatar: The Saga is (very) far from over
When it was released in 2009, Avatars shook the film industry. James Cameron’s science fiction film not only redefined the standards of visual effects in cinema, but also aroused worldwide fascination with its rich universe and its immersive narrative. The film immersed viewers in the exotic world of Pandora, a blue planet inhabited by the Na’vi people, blessed with thriving biodiversity and a deeply rooted culture.
The story followed the adventures of Jake Sully, a paraplegic ex-Marine, who, through an avatar, found himself torn between human interests and the protection of the Na’vi. He fell in love with Pandoraand for Neytiri, a Na’vi, with whom he ended up starting a family.
In The Way of Water, the second film of the saga, released in 2022, we found Jake and Neytiri, when they had to escape from the forest after returning from the GDR. They found refuge on coral reefs, with another Na’vi people called Metkayina, who lived in the heart of the ocean. Once again the audience was there and the film rocked the box office.
Three more films Avatars are expected in the coming years, starting from the third chapter, which will be released in theaters in December 2025. We will find Jake and Neytiri’s family, but also a new Na’vi people, much less peaceful than those we have already seen.
James Cameron is already thinking about seven films
The saga Avatars it is the project of a lifetime for James Cameron, to which he will dedicate more than two decades (the first film was released in 2009, the fifth is expected in 2031). And since he has no plans to leave Pandora anytime soon, the director already has ideas for a sixth, and even a seventh film ! In fact, in an interview with the magazine Peoplehe has declared:
“I have already completely written the script up to the fifth film and I have some ideas for the sixth and seventh. However, it is likely that at this point I will pass the baton. There is no escape from the passage of time. But, for now, we enjoy really what we’re doing. We love it. It’s a privilege to be able to work with such talented people.”
So, as he had already insinuated, if the saga Avatars were it to continue beyond a fifth film, James Cameron would pass the baton to another director. This announcement is both good news and bad news. If the saga has seven films, and not five, as previously announced, this means that the story will not conclude at the end ofAvatar 5 (which will partly happen on Earth), and that we will therefore have to wait for the release of a potential Avatar7 before reaching the end of the story. Will the audience still be there? The future will tell.
