Dune 2: the first opinions have arrived

A shower of praise for the new film Dune

Finally presented to the press before its theatrical release, the February 28th in France and on March 1st in the United States, Dune 2 by Denis Villeneuve received first enthusiastic reviews across the Atlantic. Much awaited, Dune, part two follows the 2021 film, already a success with critics and audiences, and seems to have pushed the slider even further, with an even more prestigious cast, more “action” according to its director, “unique images” according to Christopher Nolan. ..

It is therefore in unison that the American press declares itself particularly attracted Dune 2insisting in particular that this sci-fi blockbuster was “one of the best” in the history of the genre.

Collider’s Steven Weintraub writes:

It’s no surprise to anyone, I absolutely loved “Dune 2.” An incredible result. A brilliant soundtrack. The entire cast is excellent. My only complaint is that I wish it were longer. I am not joking. The film is 2 hours and 40 minutes long and I would have been happy to see it an hour longer.

On the side of Uproxx, Mike Ryan, who was not convinced by the first Duneseems to have had a very satisfying experience:

I was pretty divided on the first “Dune” movie. “Dune 2” is phenomenal. Right up there with the greatest sci-fi movies I’ve ever seen. I want to ride a sandworm.

A celebrated casting and comparison with Star Wars

Courtney Howard, writing for Variety, characterizes the film as “breathtaking and terribly exhilarating. It’s an adrenaline rush to the heart and head, soaring in its spectacular action sequences as much as it sings in its refined, evocative calm.”

He goes on to highlight the cast’s performances:

Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya deliver a unique performance. Austin Butler gives a strong, captivating and devilishly seductive performance. Also, another admirable performance from Dave Bautista. Rebecca Ferguson rocks the screen and Florence Pugh gives the best performance of her career.

And like Christopher Nolan, who made a comparison before Denis Villeneuve between Dune, part two AND Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, several reviews make the same comparison. So, regarding The Cinematic Reel:

“Dune 2” is The empire strikes again AND Lawrence of Arabia by Denis Villeneuve. A work of science fiction that is not only grandiose in its scale, but also in its fascinating and emotionally devastating story.
