Netflix releases Oscar-nominated films online for free

The Netflix film Nimona is available for free on YouTube

To everyone’s surprise, Netflix put its animated film online 24 hours ago Nimona in full on his YouTube channel. Available on Netflix from June 14, 2023, this is the perfect opportunity for those who don’t have an account to discover this little animated gem, nominated for an Oscar this year. Unfortunately, French subtitles are not available (for the moment) (only English ones).

The story is set in a fantasy world where magic and modern technology coexist. Nimona, with her shapeshifting powers and rebellious attitude, pushes Blackheart to adopt bolder methods in his fight against the Institution, the organization that controls the kingdom and maintains a facade of justice and order. As Nimona and Blackheart challenge the heroes and uncover the secrets and corruption of the Institution, they discover truths about themselves and the world around them.

A film that comes from afar

Nimona is the adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name created by ND Stevenson in 2015. The film adaptation project was first started at Blue Sky Studios, an animation studio known for films such as The ice Age OR Rio. Blue Sky Studios was a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, which began development on the film Nimona before major changes occur in the industry.

In March 2019, The Walt Disney Company completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, including its film and television studios and other assets. This brought Blue Sky Studios under the umbrella of Disney, together with other major animation production houses such as Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

However, in February 2021, Disney announced the closure of Blue Sky Studios as part of a restructuring and cost-cutting effort, exacerbated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the film industry. Right now, Nimona was in development at Blue Sky and was expected to launch in 2022. The studio’s closure halted production of the film and raised uncertainty about its future.

Shortly after the announcement of the closure of Blue Sky Studios, Netflix took over the project in collaboration with Annapurna Pictures, breathing new life into the film. And it’s clear that they were talented.
