And what The Kingdom of the Abyss ?
When we talk about animated cinema, we generally think above all of American (Disney’s domain), French or Japanese productions. But with The Kingdom of the Abyss, China shows that it also knows how to offer masterpieces. A film that arrives in our theaters on February 21st and is certainly not to be missed.
Directed by Tian Xiaopeng, The Kingdom of the Abyss follows Shenxiu, a 10 year old girl, sucked into the sea depths on a family cruise. In these depths he discovers a fantastic universe where fish talk and goes to Captain Nanhe’s restaurant. The latter, full of debts, does everything to satisfy his customers and to escape a strange red ghost. As soon as he arrives, Shenxiu will disrupt Nanhe’s daily life. Because during her fall, the young girl believes she heard her mother’s call. And she will do anything to find her again.
A visual madness
It took seven years to director Tian Xiaopeng to complete his film The Kingdom of the Abyss. After finding success in China with his first animated feature film Monkey King: the hero is back (2015), which raked in more than $140 million in revenue, the director says a visually impressive workwhich combines 3D and realistic animation and influences from traditional Chinese ink painting. In the press kitTian Xiaopeng specifies in this regard:
We decided to create an “ink particle painting” effect. This effect blends the impressionism of Chinese ink painting with the realism of computer animation, thus preserving the spontaneity and individuality of the ink painting while maintaining the depth of field of the scene, as well as variations in shadow and light.

A particular animation technique that represented many challenges for the director and his team. But the result was worth it a true cinematic work designed for 3D (but also appreciable in classic format). With this, Tian Xiaopeng’s goal was to make the audience feel the same feelings as her heroine and immerse him in a dream – remembering Bi Gan’s own intention A fantastic journey into the night.
I hope that when viewers wear 3D glasses at the cinema, these “particles” will appear to swirl around them, providing them with tangible immersion, as if their very breathing could agitate the particles. (…) At the end of the session, the spectators will also have the sensation of waking up from a dream.
A moving work
The Kingdom of the Abyss it’s stunningly beautiful, both in the detail of the faces and the psychedelic long shots. In fact, the film manages to deliver a number of scenic ideas without falling into the overflow. Being colorful without being disgusting. And be rhythmic and chaotic without tiring the viewer. But the animated feature film doesn’t just offer beautiful images. Tian Xiaopeng’s story is much more deep and dark than one might imagine, with the right turn of events. Furthermore, the film is not really suitable for too young audiences.

Shenxiu is really extremely alone after her parents’ divorce. His father met a new woman with whom he had a son. The young woman therefore feels excluded during the cruise and cannot count on her mother who almost never responds to her messages. With The Kingdom of the Abyssthe director, who does not hide his influence Twenty thousand leagues under the sea by Jules Verne and which it seems to evoke Enchantedtherefore wanted to delve deeper into the topic of the search for the meaning of lifewith this heroine whose discomfort is palpable.
Everyone experiences negative emotions at some point and can sometimes feel like the whole world is dark and boring. Through this work I want to show how we can make sense of an existence that seems devoid of light, and discover the strength needed to move forward in our lives.
The Kingdom of the Abyss moves from its first moments, and becomes overwhelming in its last act, with a powerful ending from which one does not emerge unscathed. This emotional wound of the viewer can, however, be delicately healed very delicate closing credits, as important as the rest of the film. To be discovered without hesitation in theaters on February 21, 2024.
