Dune 2: still intense filming
Denis Villeneuve and Warner Bros. have so far succeeded in their adaptation challenge Dune, the cult science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. An impressive work that the director wanted to adapt into several films. And so far it’s paying off. The first work, released in 2021, was a solid success with over $433 million in revenue raised. The second film, Dune 2, is about to be released and with the Covid period behind us we can expect a higher score than its predecessor. In any case, Denis Villeneuve is already working on the third film.
Everything is going well so far for the saga Dune. But behind the scenes it wasn’t always fun. Recall that for the first film it took more than seven hours to make up the Baron (played by Stellan Skarsgard). For Dune 2, shooting in the desert it was also difficult. This is what was revealed Austin Butlernewcomer, who plays Feyd-Rautha, the nephew of Baron Harkonnen.

In Dune 2, Paul Atréides (Timothée Chalamet) joins Chani and the Fremen as he plots his revenge against those who destroyed his family. In the opposing camp there is Feyd-Rautha, who will have to face several opponents first in an arena to demonstrate his strength. From the trailer images, Austin Butler, with his shaved head, looked unrecognizable and scary.
Austin Butler at over 40 degrees!
In a portrait ofEntertainment weeklythe actor said his first week, during which he had to shoot these fight sequences, was hell because of the high heat. On the tray”it was 43 degrees” he explains. And then he had to shoot the scenes in a setting that was forming “gray boxes with 60 meter walls and sand” (see photo above). Difficult conditions that gave Austin Butler and crew members the feeling of being in the microwaveand which also caused a fainting spell.
It was like a microwave. There were people fainting from heat stroke. And it was only my first week.
The actor, who had already had difficulty recovering from the filming ofElvis, he still sees positive aspects in it. Because according to him these complicated conditions have “he really brought the team together“, adding that there is”something very humiliating to find yourself in such an uncomfortable environmentDenis Villeneuve also talked about it difficulty turning in the desert. For him, the most sensible idea for the production was to take a break between the two films to allow everyone to recover.
Both films were shot in very difficult conditions and it was very physically demanding. So having a break in between was a blessing. Initially I thought I would do the two films back to back, but now I think I would be dead. It was really intense. And seeing how the public reacted to the first Dune was a boost of positive energy to return to the desert.
The filming of Dune 2 it was intense once again. But judging by the very positive feedback the film has received, it was worth it. Available in theaters from February 28th.
