Charlie’s Angels: one of the great failures of 2019
In 2019, under the leadership of Elizabeth Banks, Hollywood decided to give new life to the saga Charlie’s Angels, a cult series from the 70s which had already seen a first film adaptation in 2000 with Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. This reboot, led by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska, promised to modernize the Angels universe with a marked feminist touchin particular by introducing a traditionally male character, Bosley, played by Elizabeth Banks herself.
The story catapulted us into the heart of a dangerous mission in which the three “angels” had to prevent a revolutionary but dangerous technology from falling into the hands of criminals.
Despite the hopes and enthusiasm aroused above all by the casting, the film does not convince. With only $73 million in revenue for a budget of 48 million, the film is considered a commercial failure. Even more damning is the fact that the criticism, both professional and public, is disastrous.
Kristen Stewart’s harsh but honest words
Four years after the release of Charlie’s Angels, Kristen Stewart spoke about this topic during an interview with Variety last January. Thereby, he said he “hated making this movie”and took the opportunity to declare his love for the original film to Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore, specifying that he should not “touch” this cult feature film for an entire generation of spectators.
