Residents of the building had to be rescued by firefighters by rappelling
An apartment caught fire on Saturday night, the 24th, in Campinas, in the hinterland of São Paulo, after several explosions on the second floor of the condominium. According to Globo network affiliate EPTV, the property belonged to a retired military officer and contained more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition.
The incident occurred around 7pm, in Rua Hércules Firenze, which was full of smoke. The firefighters were called to rescue four people who, due to difficult access, had to be rescued by rappelling.
In total, 40 residents had to leave the building, which was closed and inspected by Civil Protection on Saturday night. There are no plans to return residents to the building yet.
The Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU) was also called, but none of the residents were in serious condition. The causes and circumstances that led to the fire will be ascertained by the Civil Police, as it is suspected that the explosions were caused by ammunition kept inside the apartment.
