Quentin Tarantino nostalgic?
Lately, several renowned American directors have opened up about some of their favorite films, with little highlights Always or current events. This is how Christopher Nolan revealed he loved Past lives AND After sunhe also quotes Martin Scorsese Past lives and the Wim Wenders film Perfect dayswhen Denis Villeneuve did it in a more classical register with notable 2001: A Space Odyssey, Apocalypse now AND Person.
Now it’s Quentin Tarantino’s turn, who in Brett Easton Ellis’ podcast said he particularly remembers a film from recent years.

In 2022, Quentin Tarantino shared all his admiration and love for Top Gun: nonconformistdelighted by a sight he thought “never see again” and the homage to Tony Scott. If Tom Cruise’s work in Joseph Kosinski’s film largely prevailed, there is another film, released in 2021, which he spoke about in the same period but which he now still appreciates more: History of the West Side.
“Top of the standings with Way of Fury“
The remake of the classic History of the West Side directed by Steven Spielberg, a magnificent contemporary adaptation of the legendary film (our review here), was a great critical success. But a failure in theaters and at the box office. And it’s certainly not the fault of Quentin Tarantino, who gave in to him twice at the cinema see him.
I loved “West Side Story.” It was the best film of 2021, and should have won the Oscar for best film and the guy who played Riff (Mike Faist, ed.) won his Oscar too. It’s the only film I’ve seen twice, alone, in the cinema. It was above and beyond. At the top of the charts with “Fury Road”.
This is not very surprising in the 21st century version of Quentin Tarantino, whose style has remained the same but whose form of his latest features reflects a tendency towards nostalgia and the “classical”. In fact, he is not so much the author of pulp Fiction of whom it speaks compared to that of Once upon a time… in Hollywoodwith a retrospective cinema that tends towards years marked by the phenomenon History of the West Sidepublished in 1962.
Furthermore, it is also a tribute from the director to the great Steven Spielberg, whose exceptional know-how Quentin Tarantino highlights with this choice. And which he therefore esteems at the level of Mad Max: Road Furyone of the most unanimously acclaimed films of the last decade.
