Tonight on TV: the biggest global success for a Disney live action

Beauty and the Beast 2.0: a winning bet for Disney

For several years now, Disney has embarked on an ambitious and profitable strategy: adapting its classic cartoons into a “live action” version (real shots). This strategy began sporadically with films like 101 Dalmatians in 1997, but It was in the 2010s that Disney fully embraced this trend. The decision to transform his animated classics into live-action films is based on several strategic pillars, including leveraging modern technology to reimagine these stories in live-action versions, the possibility of attracting new audiences by rekindling the love of fans of long standing, and of course, the huge box office revenue potential.

It was the first live action film of the 2010s to top $1 billion Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton, soon joined by The Jungle Book, directed in 2016 by Jon Favreau. But the absolute record has been broken The beauty and the Beastreleased in 2017, with $1.2 billion in revenue worldwide. The Lion King released in 2019 did better, but it is not considered a live action, but rather a hybrid between animation and live action.

A faithful adaptation

The beauty and the Beast is a faithful live-action adaptation of the 1991 Disney animated classic, itself inspired by the famous story. The story follows Belle, a bright and independent young woman, trapped in a castle by a Beast, who is actually a prince transformed by a spell. As they live together, Belle learns to look beyond the Beast’s monstrous appearance and discovers the noble heart that beats beneath his repulsive appearance.

The film, directed by Bill Condon, stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. Completing the cast are Luke Evans (Gaston), Kevin Kline (Maurice), Josh Gad (LeFou), Ewan McGregor (Lumière), Stanley Tucci (Maestro Cadenza), Ian McKellen (Big Ben) and Emma Thompson (Mrs. Samovar).
