Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey crowned worst film of the year
As tradition dictates, every year the Razzie Awards ceremony is held in parallel with the Oscars, which rewards the worst films of the previous year. WhileOppenheimer by Christopher Nolan triumphed at its premiere (see all the awards), it is Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey by Rhys Frake-Waterfield which was voted worst film of 2023 during the ceremony held on March 9.
Let’s remember that in this horror film loosely based on the character of Winnie the Pooh, the cute little bear turned into a bloodthirsty murderer. The reason ? Jean-Christophe abandoned him, together with all his friends, in the Forest of Blue Dreams. Deprived of food and unable to provide for themselves, the animals were forced to devour Eeyore, and then developed a visceral hatred for Jean-Christophe and humans in general. So, when Jean-Christophe returns to the Forest five years later, he finds himself trapped in the company of his girlfriend Mary and the two young people are then tortured by Winnie and her friends.
If such a film was able to see the light it is because the character of Winnie the Pooh recently entered the public domain, which opened the doors to this bloody and, to say the least, unexpected reinvention.
The director said he was “honored”
Although winning the award for worst film of the year is not usually good news, the director of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (which also won the Razzies for Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Reboot and Worst Screen Couple) wanted to see the glass half full. So, to the microphone of Varietyhe also said he was flattered that the film was competing with multimillion-dollar blockbusters, while his home movie cost less than $50,000. It was also in the “worst film of the year” category The Exorcist: Devotion, Consumables 4, In very rough waters AND Shazam! The anger of the gods.
I’m surprised that our micro-budget film is being compared to Hollywood. And this dubious honor doesn’t bother me because it puts me in front of directors I admire enormously
said Rhys Frake-Waterfield.
A sequel already filmed
Released in the US and other countries in February 2023, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey raised nearly five million dollars global box officemaking it one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
With such success, a sequel was quickly put in motion, again directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield. The film’s premiere will take place this Monday, March 11 in London, and the budget for this sequel has been revised upwards, with just under a million dollars available. So much so that we have to rethink Winnie’s costume, which the director can’t wait to let the public discover. The first images can be seen below:
