Damien: the evil child who traumatized a generation

Published in 1976, The curse it quickly became a staple of horror cinema, traumatizing an entire generation of moviegoers. Directed by Richard Donner, the film tells the story of Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck), an American diplomat, who adopts a child after the death of his own child without informing his wife. Gradually, a series of macabre and mysterious events leads Robert Thorn to discover that his adopted son, Damien is none other than the Antichrist himself.

Upon his exit, The curse was a huge success, raising nearly $61 million global box office, for a budget of just $2.8 million. The following year she also won the Oscar for best music.

The success of the film led to the birth of a franchiseincluding two sequels, released in theaters in 1978 and 1981, a television film, in 1991, and a remake, released in 2006.

The Curse: The Prequel coming in April

Eighteen years after the last film, the franchise is reborn from its ashes with a prequel, simply titled The Curse: the originwhich will arrive in our theaters on April 10th.

Directed by Arkasha Stevenson, this new film will take us to Rome, where a young American woman, named Margaret (Nell Tiger Free), begins a new life serving the Church. Quickly, she is assailed by dark forces and confronts her a terrible conspiracy whose ultimate goal is to bring evil incarnate to life. This journey leads him to question his faith and struggle to disentangle fact from fiction in a world where appearances are deceptive.

Regarding this prequel, the film’s producer stated that an attempt was made to “create the sense of pervasive distrust and threat that characterizes films like Because of a murder by Alan J. Pakula o Repulsion by Roman Polanski.” To achieve such a result, the producer declared that it was necessary to “anchore the film to Margaret’s subjectivity, tracing this psyche that fractures and ends up falling apart”.

He finally concludes by specifying that the most important thing was “immersing ourselves in the terrors that live within us and in the tumult of the times in which we live, doing justice to Damien’s genesis”.
