The Tuches: a family that has become a cult
In 2011, French viewers discovered a family like no other: the Tuches. Based in Bouzolles in the north of France, the brothers consist of Jeff Tuche (Jean-Paul Rouve), unemployed and proud of it, his wife Cathy (Isabelle Nanty), their three children: Stéphanie, Wilfried and Donald, known as “Quack-Quack,” and her grandmother, nicknamed “Mamie Suze.”
This atypical family who lives in precariousness sees their life turned upside down when they win 100 million euros in the lottery. With this sum they decide to leave the north of France, and settle in the chic principality of Monaco where they will live the life of a castle.
When it hit theaters in the summer of 2011, The Tucchi directed by Olivier Baroux attracts one and a half million spectators. A nice soundtrack, but not enough to become a cult film. It was only after its first television broadcast in 2014 that the film became a true phenomenon, attracting more than eight million viewers to TF1. and giving rise to three sequels which was a great success: 4.5 million admissions for the second and six million for the third. The fourth film, released in 2021, attracted more than two million viewers.
Two very real inspirations
The screenwriter of the film, Philippe Mechelen, had confided this BFMTV that Les Tuche had been strongly influenced by a family he discovered on the cult show Strip Tease. The De Becker family, from Brussels, had been followed by the Belgian show in several episodes broadcast since 1992. Philippe Mechelen had declared that he had contributed greatly to characterizing the members of the Tuche family. The screenwriter confided:
They live in a small house, they are crowded at the table. When we see the Tuches’ first lunch of ‘chips, french fries’, that’s pretty much it. There is a lot of closeness between the De Beckers. They come from a very modest background. Brother-in-law lives at home. The love we feel in this family has been very inspiring. When the father gets up early to make coffee, it is very touching.
The original episode that aired in 1992 can be found online to this address. The rest of their adventures are also available online, on YouTube:
The plot of the first film was also inspired by the true story of a family from Franconville, who had won 75 million euros in the lottery. And as in Les Tuche, her husband was unemployed, and had decided to leave France for Monaco. He remembered:
“I would have liked to be a little mouse to see what happens when you have money but no codes. There was a little report about this family and it didn’t go well at first. ‘Hotel de Paris in Monaco’
