Tonight on TV: one of the worst failures for a Marvel film at the cinema

Morbius: When Marvel Collapses at the Box Office

The film will be released in March 2022 Morbius is part of the expanded universe of Spider-Man spin-off Marvel characters owned by Sony. If the studio no longer has the exclusive rights to exploit Spider-Man in cinemas since it was purchased by Disney (and therefore entered the MCU), it still holds the rights to the characters adjacent to his universelike Venom, and then Morbius.

After two films dedicated to Venom which had enormous success at the box office (almost one and a half billion dollars in worldwide takings), Sony wanted to repeat the feat by proposing a film adaptation of the antagonist Morbius, here played by Jared Leto.

As a reminder, the film immerses the viewer in the story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a brilliant biochemist suffering from a rare and deadly blood disease. Desperate to find a cure to save not only his life, but that of others suffering from the same condition, Morbius embarks on a daring experiment. By combining bats’ DNA with his own, he seeks to harness their unique regenerative properties.

The experiment initially appears to be a success, as Morbius discovers he is gifted with superhuman abilities, including increased strength, speed, and healing abilities. However, with these new powers comes an insatiable thirst for human blood, transforming Morbius into a vampire-like creature. Torn between her desire to heal and the deadly consequences of his actions, Morbius struggles to control his predatory instincts evading both the authorities and other enemies who seek to exploit his abilities for their own interests.

A bitter failure

With an estimated production budget of between $75 and $83 million (excluding marketing costs), Morbius it only grossed $167 million at the worldwide box office, making it one of the worst failures for a Marvel character in cinema. With such a low score, Morbius 2, which however was anticipated at the end of the film thanks to a post-credits scene in which we saw the Vulture (the character played by Michael Keaton in the MCU), he was finally buried.

Like Venom, the film received very negative reviews. But unlike the first, it was not popular with audiences in theaters.
