Mary Poppins: the unexpected return more than 50 years later
We no longer present Mary Poppins, the magical and singing housekeeper who entered the hearts of spectators in 1964, in the Disney film of the same name. Based on the book series written by PL Traversthe original film starred Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, a nanny with magical powers who arrives in London during a mysterious storm to care for the Banks family’s children.
With the help of his friend Bert, played by Dick Van Dyke, he transforms the family’s sad life into a series of enchanting adventures and life lessons. all punctuated by musical numbers such as the unforgettable “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning several Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews. Above all, it has spanned generations, and made millions of spectators dream all over the world.
More than fifty years later, the sequel to the cult film entitled Mary Poppins Returns was released in cinemas.
Emily Blunt takes the hat
Published in 2018 and directed by Rob Marshall, this new chapter sees Emily Blunt reprising her legendary role as Mary Poppins. The story is set in London in the 1930s, in the midst of the Great Depression. We find Michael and Jane Banks, the children from the first film, now adults, played by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer.
Michael, a widower, lives with his three children and their housekeeper in the family home at 17 Allée des Cerisiers. Faced with financial hardship and the risk of losing their home, the Banks family once again finds themselves searching for a miracle. It was then that Mary Poppins, always so mysterious and wonderfulresurfaces to help the family get through these difficult times with the help of Jack, the optimistic lamplighter played by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Upon its release, this sequel that no one expected was a great success in theaters nearly $350 million in revenue raised worldwide. In France, Mary Poppins Returns manages to bring together one and a half million spectators.
In homage to the original film, Dick Van Dyke appeared in the role of Mr. Dawes Jr., the son of the old banker from the first feature film.
