Sydney Sweeney and Guillaume Canet are in theaters
We can see it at the cinema this week Sydney Sweeney make the terrible decision to enter a convent in Italy. A bad idea, because what awaits him is not heavenly. Soon, Cecilia, the girl she plays, discovers a strange atmosphere. And things get complicated when she suddenly gets pregnant. A miracle for the members of the church, but one that will make Cecilia’s life hell. Because it could be that the child growing inside her is simply the antichrist… Without being a great success or very original, Immaculate It should entertain fans of the genre.
In another genre, Guillaume Canet he will go to a quieter place, in a small seaside town in the west of France Out of season, the new film by Stéphane Brizé. A more relaxing comedy-drama than Immaculée, which sees Guillaume Canet play an actor who finds the woman he loved 15 years earlier. But beyond this romantic part, the feature film above all shows an actor “in deep questioning, catching his breath while coming to terms with his past” (see our review).
Two French comedies
Even more lightness this week with two French comedies: Repeat AND Karaoke. In her first, Louise Bourgoin plays a Latin teacher forced to participate with her class in the World Latin Championship. The problem is that so far the teacher has lied about the results of her students who actually have no knowledge in this subject. In the second film, Karaoke, this is another competition in which Michèle Laroque and Claudia Tagbo participate. The great national karaoke competition. A completely new world for Bénédicte, a famous opera singer whose career has just collapsed and she will agree to embark on this adventure with Fatou.
Two beauties
Finally, our top recommendations for this week will be two foreign films. First with the Polish film The girl and the peasants. A surprising and unique visual proposal. As for Van Gogh’s passionby the same director duo, it is a special animation since the images shot with real actors were then repainted by hand.
Finally, we highly recommend you go and discover Blue Summer (A song sung blue), a small Chinese wonder that we were able to discover during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. A film about coming of age, about first loves and the discovery of the desire that precedes them. We follow Xian, a 15 year old girl who meets Mingmei, a slightly older girl of Korean descent. A strong and complex relationship will be born between the two. The emotional strength of the film then derives from the beautiful and delicate staging. It’s all in the details, in the gestures and looks more than in the words.
