New Marvel animation, which continues the classic series shown between 1992 and 1997, debuts on Disney+ starting this Wednesday (20)

X-Men ’97 arrives on Disney+ this Wednesday (20) reviving the classic series from the 1990s almost 30 years after it ended. Despite the passage of time and the innovations that came with it, the director Jake Castorena revealed, in an interview with Inversethat the new episodes were made by hand, just like in the old days.

“First of all, this is still a hand-drawn 2D program. Even though, nowadays, we’ve leveraged computer graphics for overly complicated layouts or vehicles or ships, you still have to draw all of that by hand, because if you don’t If you do this, it won’t look the way you want it to,” justified.

I need to thank our distant collaborator, [o estúdio de animação sul-coreano] Studio Mir. They worked on the series until the end, together with our animation team, to really resolve basic questions: ‘What’s too sophisticated? What is not? Where can we utilize the old tools of the trade and where can we embellish what we have learned over 30 years?'”added Castorenaabout the production process of the novelty.

The director also said that this was a challenge, because the idea was that the series “still looked like a program released 30 years ago”. “For me, it all came down to looking at what was happening between 1996 and 1998, what was being done in animation, what the cinematic elements were at the time and how television worked.”he explained.

“I wanted to find the common denominators in all these elements of the era, because you watch certain things from one era and you automatically know it’s from that era. But we still had to make it [a série] relevant and ensure it still works today. A lot of this process was just sitting in a room, on a big couch in front of the TV for hours, figuring this stuff out.”added Castorena.

Created by Beau DeMayo (Moon Knight), who recently left Marvel Studios after writing the scripts for a possible second season of the animation, the series will follow the X-Men following the desire of Professor Xavier to continue fighting to protect the innocent and defenseless. Watch the trailer:
